Abstract
This study was conducted to determine the genotype for self-incompatibility in ¢¥Whangkeumbae¢¥ pear (Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai) cultivar. ¢¥Whangkeumbae¢¥ was compatible with genotype S©ûS©ü, S©ûS©þ, S©üS©ý, S©þS_5 in 1994 and with genotype S©ûS©ü, S©ûS©þ, S©ûS_5, S©üS©ý, S©þS_5 in 1995. In 1996, the cross-pollinations of ¢¥Whangkeumbae¢¥ with pollen from other cultivars resulted in relatively high rate of fruit set above 78%, except pollen from ¢¥Chojuro¢¥. The fruits from various cross-pollinations were not significantly different in their characteristics and the seed numbers in the fruits ranged from 5.6 to 7.1. Pollens of ¢¥Nijisseiki¢¥ germinated poorly on the stigma of ¢¥Whangkeumbae¢¥ although the pollens had normal germinability on agar medium. Pollen tubes germinated from four other pollen cultivars reached the stylar base of ¢¥Whangkeumbae¢¥ in 72 hours after the pollination. Some pollens of ¢¥Nijisseiki¢¥ and ¢¥Chojuro¢¥ developed deformed pollen tubes during the elongation in the tips in the style of ¢¥Whangkeumbae¢¥, while this was not observed in ¢¥Hayatama¢¥. Pollens of ¢¥Shinseiki¢¥ (known to have S©ýS©þ genotype for self-incompatibility) germinated on the stigma surface of ¢¥Whangkeumbae¢¥, but showed arrested pollen tube growth in the style, suggesting that the genotype for self-incompatibility in ¢¥Whangkeumbae¢¥ is S©ýS©þ. These findings would be conducive in selecting the suitable pollinizers for ¢¥Whangkeumbae¢¥ as well as pear breeding program.
